Whitehead's book is semi-autobiographical. In an interview in the "New Yorker" he says "It's all true except for the parts that are made up, and most of it is made up. Like Benji, I grew up in Manhattan and spent my summers in Sag Harbor, until college. My parents worked in the city and only came out on weekends, and there was a whole gang of us in the same situation. So the set-up is true."

Benji Cooper's parents are affluent professionals who avow a summer house in Sag Harbor, Long Island. Benji attends a predominantly white prep school but in the summer he reconnects with his black friends at the shore. He and his younger brother, Reggie, are left to fend for themselves during the week and their parents come out on the weekends.

Not a lot happens in the summer of 1985 - the boys run out of food and get jobs, Reggie at Burger King and Benji at Jonni Waffle, complex new handshakes are mastered, there's an urgency with a Bb gun and Benji worries about the opposite sex. And yet Whitehead manages to make the lowly supremely entertaining.

My own upbringing was very distinct than the one depicted in the book, there are few parallels between my life and Benji's, yet his story transcends race and class. I could still identify with the angst and feelings of awkwardness that are universal in the life of every teenager.

The characterization is amazing and the author has a sharp eye for public commentary. His writing is superb! He's a scholar of the metaphor. This is not a book with a coherent plot, but a slice of life seen straight through the eyes of a extra young man. It's funny, it's thought-provoking, it's engaging. I extremely advise it.
